How Do I Choose the Right Takeout Cold Cup for My Brand?

As a packaging broker, we've helped food businesses source cold cups for more than a decade. We learned that the wrong cup can impact everything from customer experience to brand perception and operating costs.Â
Last year alone, our clients purchased over 1.2 million cold cups. During that time, we've seen firsthand what works, what doesn't, and the mistakes businesses make when selecting cold beverage packaging.
If you're trying to choose the right takeout cold cup for your brand, here's what we recommend.

Start with the Beverage, Not the Cup
One of the most common mistakes we see is businesses choosing a cup before thinking about what they're actually serving.
An iced coffee shop has very different packaging needs than a smoothie bar or juice company. The beverage should determine the cup size, material, and lid style.
Before selecting a cold cup, ask yourself:
What beverages will be served most often?
Will drinks include whipped cream, cold foam, or toppings?
Will customers consume the drink immediately or take it to go?
Will drinks be delivered through third-party apps?
Is presentation important for social media and branding?
Answering these questions first will help narrow down your options and prevent costly mistakes later.
PET Cups Remain the Most Popular Choice
When sourcing cold cups for our clients, PET (polyethylene terephthalate) cups continue to be one of the most requested options.
PET cups are clear, lightweight and durable, making them ideal for showcasing your beverages like iced coffees, smoothies, juice, lemonades and other iced drinks. And on top of that, it is highly recyclable.
One reason PET cups are so popular is that customers can see the product inside. A beautifully layered iced coffee or colourful smoothie becomes part of your marketing. In many cases, the drink itself becomes the visual centrepiece of your brand.Â
Another choice that is becoming more and more popular are cups made from PLA (polylactic acid), a biodegradable thermoplastic made from plant based materials like cornstarch or sugarcane. Although looking similar to PET cups, PLA cups are said to be compostable under commercial composting conditions. We suggest checking your local municipality for their composting rules and regulations to make sure that it can actually be composted. Many municipalities have strict guidelines regarding what materials are accepted and plastics, even bio-based, are often not on the list.
Don't Overlook Lid Compatibility
If there's one piece of advice I would give food businesses, it's this:
Spend as much time choosing your lid as you do choosing your cup.
We've worked with businesses that selected a great-looking cup only to discover that the lid wasn't ideal for their beverage.
Choosing the wrong lid can lead to:
Leaks and spills
Frustrated customers
Delivery issues
Increased replacement costs
Negative reviews
Always verify cup and lid compatibility before placing a large order.
Understanding the Different Types of Cold Cup Lids
Not all lids are created equal. Different beverages require different solutions.
Dome Lids
Best for drinks with whipped cream, cold foam, or other toppings. The extra height helps protect the presentation of the beverage.
Re-closable Lids
A popular choice for iced coffee and iced tea. The closing tab makes them convenient for customers taking drinks on the go or for delivery orders.
Flat Lids with X-Slots
Designed for use with straws and commonly used for soft drinks, iced beverages, and fountain drinks.
Sip Lids
A straw-free alternative that allows customers to drink directly from the lid.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right takeout cold cup isn't just about selecting a container.
It's about creating the best possible experience for your customers while supporting your operations and reinforcing your brand.
Businesses that take the time to evaluate all of these factors above typically avoid costly packaging mistakes and deliver a better customer experience.
